Our campaign to stop Wireless Festival in Finsbury Park is rapidly gaining momentum.
As many of you already know, Wireless Festival tickets for the 8th, 9th, 10th July 2016 are now on sale and it is being widely promoted across London, but Haringey Council have yet to confirm whether they are going to grant permission for the event.
We were told by a Council officer on the 10th March that, ‘It is not uncommon for event organisers to go on sale without all necessary permissions in place. They do so entirely at their own risk.’
We are staggered that Festival Republic (Live Nation) would promote and sell tickets in this way without the venue being confirmed already.
Haringey Council have released the following statement saying, ‘We are considering all responses to the stakeholder consultation before making a decision on this application.’
‘Haringey Council work closely with the Finsbury Park events stakeholder group – which includes the Friends of Finsbury Park – when planning for events to ensure that they run as smoothly and safely as possible and the safety of people attending, as well as nearby residents, is always our top priority.’
The stakeholder group that Haringey Council are referring to has not meet since June 2015, when they were stopped by the The Cabinet Member for Parks and the Environment, Cllr Stuart McNamara. So far we have had no word from the Council about when the stakeholder meetings will be reconvened despite numerous attempts to contact the Council by email.
We are considering launching a fundraising campaign to bring judicial review proceedings to quash any decision by Haringey Council to allow the Wireless Festival to take place at Finsbury Park in July 2016.
We are not against Wireless Festival, but its sheer size and scale is totally inappropriate for Finsbury Park. We are happy to see events staged which don’t involve the closure of one third of the park in high summer, are more inclusive of the local community, and benefit the Park itself.
