Safety in the park
Our position
Our position is that the park should be a safe place, ideally with its own park police and the park police phone number available on notice boards at all gates as in places like Battersea Park.
Given the position of Finsbury Park next to a major transport hub, it can be used for drug dealing. There is also a long standing issue of the park being used for sex trade which has recently caused damage to historical shrub beds. There have across the years been assaults and muggings of young people leaving the sports arena.
We have recently campaigned for the park gates to be locked overnight from like many other London parks such as Clissold, Victoria, Battersea and Southwark. Other councils do this precisely to cut down on criminal uses of the park at night which leads to a lot of littering and degradation of the park. We estimate this will cost the council approximately £30k a year but will dramatically reduce littering, etc.
